Usually the word Christian and pornography used in the same sentence causes a ‘gasp reaction.’
There are however, many Christians that are carrying the weight of shame and guilt associated with watching porn. Families are destroyed, precious time is lost, and many are hindered in their walk because of porn. Regardless, God is merciful and still has a plan for you.
Here are some things that may help you if you struggle with this issue:
1. Be thankful that God’s mercies are new everyday.
1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness”. What an encouragement! This means that if you confess and repent of your sins, God will forgive you and you can move forward to a brand new day. Don’t struggle with guilt, rather, hand that over to God…it isn’t yours to carry anymore!
2. When you get an urge to look at porn, pick up the Bible instead.
It helps to quote scripture in every situation. It may be helpful to read the Bible until the urge goes away. If the urge gets stronger, then read the Bible out loud. The enemy isn’t fond of scripture.
3. Get an accountability partner if possible.
Someone who can pray with you and help you through this. It may be hard at first to talk about but make sure you are opening up to someone you trust and someone who will in fact hold you accountable.
4. Modify and restrict your Internet searches.
There is software such as ‘covenant eyes’ that prohibits such searches. Another helpful tip is to set your browser to google and set up safe search in your privacy settings. This will prevent unwanted content.
5. Be kind to yourself and forgive yourself.
Many who struggle with porn feel a need to beat themselves up. Don’t do this. If God, being Almighty is willing to forgive you and not hold it against you…you can forgive yourself.
If you have suffered from a broken family due to porn, remember this: God is in the business of restoration. He heals the broken hearted and all things are possible through Him. Have hope.
