Why Can’t I Hear God?

Why cant i hear god

How many times have you sat there thinking to yourself, “How come I feel like I can’t hear God…ever?” There are periods of time where we all might experience this and I’d like to share with you some common reasons why you might not be able to hear God.

1. He’s silent¬†

Many times we can’t experience God’s voice simply because he is silent. This always reminds me of the quote, “Remember, the teacher is always silent during the test.”

Ask yourself, what might God be trying to teach me? Examine if there is anything in your life that God might be trying to change. Also, sometimes God’s silence is the best way to get us to move and communicate with us.

2. My voice is too big

It’s hard to hear God when we are the only voice we are listening too. We often get so immersed in our own problems and our own lives that all of a sudden our voice leaves no room for God’s voice. Always remember that in order for us to fully hear God, we must quiet our own voice to hear his.

3. Failure to recognize his voice

From my own personal experience, in order to hear God’s voice requires practice. That’s right, I said practice. Why? Like any relationship, we must be willing to put in the time, patience, and effort into our relationship with God in order to hear him. If we do though, it will go a long way in order to hear him better.

4. Listening to others

Just like our own voice can get in the way, other people’s voices can also interfere with our ability to hear God. For example, how many times have you been in a situation where people were constantly giving their own opinions about what to do? It’s easy to get caught up in what everyone else is saying but the most important voice we must listen to is God’s voice.

5. I don’t want to listen

Sometimes we simply don’t want to listen to God. I think this is most common when we knowingly are doing something wrong and yet we don’t want to change or give it up.

I hope these common problems of why you might not be able to hear God’s voice help your understand and provide ways you can change it. I know God desires to communicate and have an intimate relationship with you, so don’t give up and keep pressing forward!

      Hi Mohr,

Everyone is different when it comes to prayer and the beauty of it is that as long as we have a genuine and willing heart, I believe God will speak to us in our own unique way.

Most times I feel that God does not give me the things I ask of him when I need them and I alaways compare myself with my mates. I know its wrong but I dnt know how to overcome these feelings inside of me.

    • HealingfromGod says:

      Hi Gloria,

I think what you are feeling is something that every Christian feels at some point in their life. There are times I have prayed for things, I felt that I needed them and things just didn’t turn out the way that I thought they would.

But when I look back at those times I realize that God had better things for me. Sometimes I look back and realize all of the “hidden” blessings that I had overlooked that really helped me at the time.

I encourage you to meditate on scriptures of faith and love, let God’s word penetrate your heart so that you can find peace and comfort knowing that no matter the circumstances you are going through right now, God is with you and has an incredible plan for your life. I hope this helps Gloria. God bless.

Here are some scriptures for you.

  • Michael says:

I wonder if God is hearing my prayers to heal my wife… But I also must listen to the quiet voice that I know he speaks to me in. My loud frustrations emerge to block His voice, I pray now to be still in my soul

    • HealingfromGod says:

Its really hard Michael when someone really important to us is hurting and we desperately want to alleviate their pain. I think just letting go and giving it to God is really a huge act of faith that God often rewards. Praying for you both.

  • Jeremy says:

Sometimes I dont want to believe in him because my parents believe everything they do is God led but even a non believer can tell most of the things my parents do is not God led. At the moment Im going through a lot and when i seek help from my family they say they will and once i make a small mistake they turn on me and leave it up to me. I want to pray about it but in the end i dont know who im really praying to. Myself to make me believe he is there or actually to him. Ive tried praying in the past and it hasnt helped at all. I dont want to fall off the path but i have nothing to keep me on. Someone help?

    • H says:

praying for you, Jeremy…don’t quit! “Keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking…He promises He will answer you!”
